Our Story
Pioneer's Microgreens started as an official business in the summer of 2019. But our story as farmers has a history that began five generations ago.
Ofelia Martinez, as a fourth-generation farmer, grew up working with her father and siblings in tending plantations. They cultivated corn, sugar cane, and a wide array of fruits and vegetables such as avocados, mangos, guavas, lemons, cucumbers, radish, etc. Although it was the family business, it became more: it became a way of life. With this lifestyle, there is no need for a fridge!
It was grandpa, great-grandpa, and great-great-grandpa who established the spirit of farming in our family. Each one passed on the appreciation of tending to the earth and treasuring its beauty.
Our belief is that food should be grown responsibly, locally, and taste delicious! Our drive is to bring life, soul, and color to your plates. Although microgreens might be small in size, their taste and vibrancy add depth to any meal.
This whole business can be credited to Ofelia Martinez, my mother, and business partner. She is quite the industrious woman, with aspirational goals and exceptional accomplishments. Besides being the owner and head cultivator of our urban farm, she is a mother of three children! Not to mention, owning and running a part-time photography business, Ofelia Martinez Photography. She is quite the role model of overcoming life obstacles, putting her heart into her work, and motivating others to reach their full potential.
As for myself, Alexa Martinez, I am the fifth generation of farmers and co-owner of this business. Just coming out of high school, my parents helped me to set the goal of opening my own business. The advantage of being co-owner of this business is that unlike some of my other high-school graduates, I get to be my own boss and work from home. Granted, it can be twice as much work, but it's work I love.
One other person that I would like to introduce, is our venture capitalist and sponsor: Mr. Alan Martinez. If you think it's a coincidence that he has the same last name as my mother and I, it's not! He's the head of our family and from the very start a great supporter of our business. He has collaborated with us from planting to building this website and even our green house. A special thank you to Mr. Martinez, for seeing our potential as entrepreneurs and being the great dad that he is!
Our story continues, learning day by day the dos and don'ts of farming. It's an adventure of a lifetime and we are especially happy that we can serve our community in this way.
